How much is state income tax by state in 2026?

State income tax by state in 2026 runs from USD 0 in the nine states with no income tax to USD 7,152 in Oregon for a single earner on USD 100,000, and from USD 0 to USD 102,459 in California on USD 1,000,000, as computed by Mirabello from each state's official schedule.

The scope sits next to the numbers because it decides what they mean: wages only, standard deduction, no itemising, no local tax, no refundable credits; the family profile is married filing jointly, one earner, two children aged 10 and 8. These are computed 2026 figures, not a personal assessment. This article is general information and not tax advice; your state revenue department or a qualified US tax adviser can confirm your own position. The bracketed percentage is the effective rate, the tax as a share of the wage income in that column. The state names link to each state's page.

Examples of the official schedules behind the table are the California 2026 tax rate schedules, the Alabama withholding booklet and the Arkansas withholding formula. Rows appear in alphabetical order on purpose: this is a reference, not a league table.

Which state has the lowest income tax at USD 250,000?

State income tax at USD 250,000 for a single earner is lowest on this measure in the nine states at USD 0, then in North Dakota at USD 3,594, an effective 1.44%, and highest on this measure in Oregon at USD 22,706, an effective 9.08%, followed by California at USD 18,861 and the District of Columbia at USD 18,375.

Washington, one of the nine, has legislated a 9.9% tax on annual adjusted gross income above USD 1 million from 1 January 2028 under Senate Bill 6346, which these 2026 figures do not include. The nine states at zero are covered, with what each charges instead, in our article on states with no income tax. Among other states that tax wages, Louisiana is at USD 7,115, Indiana at USD 7,346 and Pennsylvania at USD 7,675 at this level. A lower income tax figure is one measure only, and says nothing about property tax, sales tax or housing in the same state.

How does state income tax change at USD 500,000 and USD 1,000,000?

State income tax at higher incomes depends on the shape of the schedule, because Pennsylvania stays at an effective 3.07% at every level from USD 100,000 to USD 1,000,000 while California climbs from 4.91% to 10.25% and New Jersey from 4.18% to 7.45% across the same range of single wage profiles.

Flat systems barely move. Utah holds 4.45% at every single level, and Illinois moves from 4.81% to 4.95% as its exemption stops mattering. Graduated systems rise, some steeply near the top: Minnesota goes from 5.28% to 9.25% and the District of Columbia from 5.63% to 9.01%. Alabama is the case that runs the other way in this table, falling from 4.1% to 3.38%; the Alabama page is the place to read further.

At USD 500,000 the highest figure on this measure is Oregon at USD 47,456. At USD 1,000,000 it is California at USD 102,459, with Oregon at USD 96,956. Among states that tax wages, the lowest on this measure at USD 1,000,000 is North Dakota at USD 22,254.

What is state income tax for a family with two children?

State income tax for a family with two children, married filing jointly with one earner, runs from USD 0 in the nine states to USD 10,174 in Oregon on USD 150,000, and to USD 94,913 in Oregon on USD 1,000,000, on the same 2026 computation by Mirabello and the same exclusions.

The order changes against the single profile: at USD 1,000,000 Oregon's family figure of USD 94,913 is above California's USD 87,401, whereas California is higher for a single earner. Household rules also weigh differently from state to state: California's USD 150,000 family pays an effective 2.9%, while Pennsylvania's pays 3.07%, the same as every other Pennsylvania profile.

Why are 11 states missing from this state income tax table?

Our state income tax table omits 11 states, namely Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont, because we publish a state only when its rules have been read from the official source, and a figure we cannot stand behind is left out rather than estimated from a secondary table.

Their absence says nothing about whether their tax is high or low. We could have filled these rows from calculators, and readers could not have told which cells we had checked. We prefer a visible gap: rows will be added when the reading is done, and our methodology page describes the standard they have to meet. For now, each of these states has its own revenue department, and that is where to go for a figure.

What does this state income tax comparison leave out?

Our state income tax comparison leaves out local income taxes, itemised deductions, refundable credits, capital gains and federal income tax, because it applies 2026 state schedules to wage income alone at each level from USD 100,000 to USD 1,000,000, so your own bill can differ and sometimes by a wide margin.

Local tax is the largest omission for some readers. New York City is the clearest example, as we explain in our New York to Florida article. Investment income follows different rules from state to state, and our California to Texas article shows how a full move looks once property tax and housing are added. Direct side-by-side pages exist for California to Texas and New York to Florida. You can also check where you stay taxable with our guide to US state tax residency rules, and read US state estate and inheritance taxes and cost of living by US state for the other two layers.

If you are coming to the United States from abroad, begin with the route: our USA immigration overview, our note on the US golden visa question and, for residency routes in other countries, our golden visa programme overview. Then read where to live on a green card, and US taxes after moving if you are coming from Germany, Switzerland or Austria. The USA relocation guide brings the state pages together. In summary

State income tax is one column in a larger comparison, and the same income can give very different answers depending on the schedule, the household and what the figures leave out. We would rather show 11 gaps than publish numbers we cannot stand behind. None of this is tax advice: your state revenue department or a qualified US tax adviser can confirm your position.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What state income tax would I pay on USD 100,000?

On our 2026 computation for a single earner, wages only, it runs from USD 0 in the nine states with no income tax to USD 7,152 in Oregon. New York is USD 4,860 and California USD 4,911, excluding local tax.

What state income tax would I pay on USD 1,000,000?

On the same computation it runs from USD 0 to USD 102,459 in California. Oregon is USD 96,956 and New York USD 67,951, excluding local tax such as New York City income tax.

Why is my state not in the table?

We publish a state only when its rules have been read from the official source. Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont are not computed yet, and their absence says nothing about their tax level.

Do these figures include local income tax?

No. They exclude local income tax, itemised deductions, refundable credits, capital gains and federal income tax. They apply each state's 2026 schedule to wages with the standard deduction.

What is the effective rate in the table?

It is the computed state income tax as a share of the wage income in that column. A top rate applies only to the income above its threshold, so the effective rate is usually lower.

Which states charge a flat rate at every level in the table?

Pennsylvania shows 3.07% at every level, for single and family profiles alike. Utah shows 4.45% at every single level. Other states with near-flat results, such as Illinois, vary slightly because of exemptions.
