The short answer

Which US states have no state income tax?

9 states levy no state income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. That is only one lever: sales, property, estate and inheritance taxes, rents and price levels differ widely too, so a move is best judged on all of them together.

No state income tax

States that do not tax wages

9 states levy no state income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

No income tax does not mean low tax overall: these states raise revenue through sales, property and other taxes, and Washington taxes large long-term capital gains through a separate excise. The state pages set out each rule with its official source.

Move comparisons

These are the moves our clients ask about most. Each comparison sets the two states side by side; every difference is computed from the official figures, never estimated.

How to read this

Income tax is one lever among several

Each state sets its own income, sales, property, estate and inheritance taxes, so the same household can face very different bills across a state line. Who counts as a resident is decided by each state's own domicile and day-count rules, which is why the timing and evidence of a move matter.

Federal income tax, immigration status and the rules for US citizens and green-card holders abroad are the same in every state. Rents, home prices, schools and commuting weigh on the decision too. Our consultants help you weigh these together for your own household.

Questions

Relocating within the US: common questions

Which states have no income tax?

9 states levy no state income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Check each state page for capital gains, estate and inheritance rules, which differ even among these states.

Does moving state change my federal tax?

No. Federal income tax applies the same way in every state. A move changes only state and local taxes, so the saving depends on your income type, your deductions and the taxes of the new state.

When does a move end residence in my old state?

Each state applies its own test, usually domicile (your permanent home) plus a statutory test based on days spent in the state and keeping a home there. High-tax states examine moves closely, so keep records of where you live, work and spend your time. The state pages quote each test from the official source.

How much do rents differ between states?

Median gross rent ranges from $921 to $2,160 per month across the states, according to the Census Bureau American Community Survey 2025. City and rural rents differ widely within a state.

Are these figures a personal tax calculation?

No. They are statutory state rates and official statistics. Your own bill depends on your income type, deductions, local taxes and federal rules. For a personal calculation use the state revenue department or a tax adviser.

Information, not tax or legal advice. Rates are statutory state rates for the stated year; local income, sales and property taxes, deductions and federal tax are not included. Statistics are the latest official releases for the year shown. Confirm your own position with the state revenue department or a tax adviser.
