The short answer

What services do Maltese citizens abroad most often need?

Maltese citizens abroad most often need to renew a passport through an embassy or consulate, register a child born abroad and obtain the child's first passport, and register a foreign spouse as a Maltese citizen after five years of marriage. Each follows official Identità or Aġenzija Komunità Malta rules and fees.

In detail

Maltese Citizen Services, explained

Help for Maltese families, wherever they live

Around one million people around the world are Maltese or of Maltese descent, with large communities in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. For them, the most important dealings with the Maltese state are practical: renewing a passport, registering a child, and helping a husband or wife become Maltese. Each is handled by a different authority with its own forms, and almost all of them require a personal appearance, either in Malta or at a Maltese embassy, high commission or consulate.

Mirabello Consultancy is a Swiss advisory firm with offices in Zurich, Dubai and Hong Kong SAR. We support Maltese citizens and their families remotely, in 11 languages, preparing and checking every file before it reaches the authorities, booking the right appointments and following each application through to the result. You can file any of these applications yourself; our role is to save you the time, the repeat visits and the uncertainty.

What only the authorities can do

Every decision on a Maltese passport, a birth registration or a citizenship application is made by Identità or by Aġenzija Komunità Malta, and no third party can speed one up or influence it. The only official fast track in these services is the Passport Office's urgent service, which issues a passport in 4 working hours for applications made in Malta. Citizenship applications have no paid or official fast track. What determines how quickly most families get a result is whether the file is complete and consistent the first time.

How we work

  • Eligibility first. We confirm what applies to you, whether a child is already Maltese, whether a spouse meets the five-year rule, and whether a passport can be renewed abroad.
  • Documents once, used everywhere. Certificates from the Malta Public Registry and parish records, apostilles and certified translations are obtained once and reused across a family's applications.
  • Forms prepared and checked. Form A for passports, foreign birth and marriage registrations, and Form B for spouses, with consent signatures and recommender requirements handled before the appointment.
  • Appointments and follow-up. We book the appointment at the Passport Office, the Public Registry, the Agency or the right mission, and follow each application until the document is issued.

Government fees are always paid at cost and shown separately from our service fee, which we confirm per case after a free, no-obligation consultation. Matters that need a legal opinion are referred to a warranted Maltese advocate.

Not investment citizenship

These are ordinary services for Maltese citizens and their families. They are open to those who already hold, or are entitled to, Maltese citizenship through birth, descent or marriage, and they are decided on eligibility, never on payment. Malta's former citizenship by investment programme closed in 2025. Investors looking for residence in Malta can explore the Malta Permanent Residence Programme and the Global Residence Programme, which are entirely separate from the services on this page.

Questions

Maltese Citizen Services: frequently asked questions

Can I renew my Maltese passport without travelling to Malta?

Yes. Maltese citizens abroad renew through the nearest Maltese embassy, high commission or consulate, where biometrics are taken in person. The application is sent to the Passport Office in Malta and the passport is returned by courier. See our Maltese passport renewal guide.

Is my child Maltese if born abroad?

A child born on or after 1 August 1989 is Maltese automatically if either parent was a Maltese citizen at the birth. The foreign birth is then registered with the Malta Public Registry for €2.60 before a passport can be issued. See our newborn registration guide.

How can my husband or wife become Maltese?

A foreign spouse can register as a Maltese citizen after five years of marriage and living together, using Form B, for €150 plus €50 on approval. A marriage celebrated abroad must first be registered in Malta. See our citizenship by marriage guide.

Is there a fast track for Maltese citizenship?

No. There is no paid or official fast track for citizenship by marriage or for registering a child, and no agency can speed up a decision. The only official fast track in these services is the urgent passport service, which takes 4 working hours for applications made in Malta.

Does Mirabello charge the government fees?

Government fees are paid at cost and always shown separately. Mirabello's service fee covers preparation, coordination and follow-up, and is confirmed per case after a free consultation, before you commit.

Is this related to Malta citizenship by investment?

No. These services are for people who are, or are entitled to become, Maltese through birth, descent or marriage. Malta's former citizenship by investment programme closed in 2025, and no payment can buy Maltese citizenship through these routes.
