Most UAE account refusals are not close calls. They trace back to an incomplete file, a source-of-wealth narrative that is asserted rather than evidenced, or a structure the bank was never going to be comfortable with. All three are fixable before you apply, and none of them is fixable afterwards.

Prepared, not promised
Most UAE account refusals are not close calls. They trace back to an incomplete file, a source-of-wealth narrative that is asserted rather than evidenced, or a structure the bank was never going to be comfortable with. All three are fixable before you apply, and none of them is fixable afterwards.
Opening a UAE bank account is the step that derails more relocations than any visa question, and it is the one most people prepare for last.
It is worth being clear about why refusals happen, because the popular explanation is wrong. Accounts are rarely declined on a knife edge. They are declined because the file was incomplete, because the source-of-wealth story was asserted rather than evidenced, or because the corporate structure was one the bank was never going to be comfortable with. Each of those is fixable in advance. None of them is fixable after a refusal, and a refusal makes the next application harder rather than easier.
We do not open bank accounts, and we cannot promise one. Nobody outside a bank can. Any firm suggesting it has a relationship that produces accounts is describing something that does not survive the bank's own compliance process, and increasingly it is describing something they are not licensed to offer.
What we produce is a Banking Readiness File: your documentation assembled and stress-tested to what UAE banks actually require, a source-of-wealth narrative that is evidenced rather than asserted, a corporate and beneficial-ownership picture that answers the questions before they are asked, and an assessment of which institutions publish criteria you actually meet.
The fee is fixed, it is for the work, and it is payable whether or not any account is opened. That is not a caveat buried in terms; it is the honest structure of the service. A fee contingent on an outcome we do not control would misrepresent what we are able to do. We accept no commission from any bank, which is why the assessment of which institutions suit you is worth reading.
You apply directly, and the decision is entirely the bank's.
The Central Bank of the UAE publishes a market conduct standard governing how banks must treat small and medium-sized business customers at account opening, including transparency about what documentation is required and the obligation to act proportionately and to document the basis of a refusal.
There is no universal winner among UAE banks either. Institutions differ sharply in the profiles they are comfortable with, and the one a friend recommends may be the least suitable for your structure. Very few people arriving at a UAE bank know this standard exists. Preparing a file against a published regulatory standard, rather than against a rumour about what a particular relationship manager likes, is a materially different exercise, and it is the difference between a boutique advisory and someone who says they know a person at a bank.
The recurring failures are consistent enough to plan around:
Personal banking follows residence rather than preceding it, and the sequence is fixed: residence permit, then Emirates ID, then the account. Non-residents have materially narrower options. Most of the frustration we see here comes from people expecting to complete the banking before the residence, which the chain does not allow.
Banking is not a standalone product in our practice and we would be cautious of anyone who sells it as one to people they have never met. It works as part of a relocation or structuring engagement, where the company, the residence and the banking are designed together, because in practice they determine one another.
Questions
No. Nobody outside a bank can, and a firm that suggests otherwise is describing something that will not survive the bank's own compliance process. The decision is entirely the bank's. What we can do is make sure the file reaching them is complete, evidenced and consistent, and that you are applying to institutions whose published criteria you actually meet.

Rarely on a knife edge. The common causes are an incomplete file, a source-of-wealth account that is stated but not documented, a corporate structure that does not match the declared activity, a free zone licence the bank is not comfortable with, or substance that exists only on paper. All of those are addressable before you apply and none of them after, which is why preparation matters more than introductions.
The company, but design it with the banking in mind. The licence, the free zone and the activity codes all shape whether a bank will take you on, and the cheapest licence is often the one banks are least comfortable with. Choosing the structure on setup price and then discovering it is unbankable is a common and expensive sequence, and it usually means starting again.
Personal banking follows residence rather than preceding it: residence permit, then Emirates ID, then the account. Non-resident options exist but are materially narrower. Corporate accounts follow the company and its licence. Most of the frustration we see comes from expecting the banking to be completed first, which the chain does not permit.
No, from any of them. Our fee comes from you and is payable for the work regardless of the outcome. That is the only arrangement under which an assessment of which bank suits you is worth anything, and it is also the only one consistent with our position that we are not selling an account.
For UAE residents
Everything on this page is free to read and we would rather you had it. Advisory engagements for clients already resident in the UAE are not open while we complete the local licensing position, and we are not going to solicit them before that is settled.
Leave an address and we will tell you once it opens. Nothing else, and no follow-up in the meantime.
