How much do I need to make to qualify for a Malta Digital Nomad Visa?

A stable monthly income of €2,700 before taxes is needed to qualify for the digital nomad visa. This income must be earned from working remotely and not from passive income like rent.

How do I apply for a Malta Digital Nomad Visa in 2026?

To apply for a Malta Digital Nomad Visa, you must submit an online application through the Maltese Residency Malta Agency, providing proof of employment with a foreign company or evidence of freelance work for clients outside Malta.

The application process involves the following steps:

  • Prepare documentation: Valid passport, health insurance covering Malta, proof of accommodation, and evidence of stable remote employment or freelance contracts
  • Demonstrate income: You must prove a minimum annual income of EUR 42,000 (or equivalent monthly earnings)
  • Submit your application: Complete the online form and pay the EUR 300 application fee
  • Await processing: Applications are typically processed within 4 to 8 weeks

Mirabello Consultancy can guide you through the entire process, ensuring your documentation meets all requirements for a smooth approval.

Can I bring my family on a Malta Digital Nomad Visa?

Yes, the Malta Digital Nomad Visa permits you to include your spouse or partner and dependent children in your application. Family members receive the same residency rights and can live with you in Malta for the duration of the permit.

Key points regarding family inclusion:

  • Spouse or partner: Must provide proof of the relationship (marriage certificate or evidence of cohabitation)
  • Dependent children: Children under 18 are eligible, and older dependants may qualify under specific circumstances
  • Income threshold: The EUR 42,000 minimum income applies per applicant, though family applications may require demonstrating sufficient financial means to support all members
  • Healthcare: All family members must have comprehensive health insurance valid in Malta

Malta offers an excellent quality of life for families, with highly regarded international schools, a safe environment, and a warm Mediterranean climate.

How long can I stay in Malta on a Digital Nomad Visa?

The Malta Digital Nomad Visa is initially issued for one year and is renewable, allowing you to extend your stay beyond the initial period provided you continue to meet the eligibility criteria.

Important details about the duration:

  • Initial permit: 12 months from the date of issuance
  • Renewal: You may apply for renewal before the permit expires, provided you still work remotely for a foreign employer or clients
  • Schengen travel: As a Malta resident, you can travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • No path to citizenship: The Digital Nomad Visa is a temporary residency permit and does not directly lead to permanent residency or Maltese citizenship

If you are seeking longer-term residency options in Malta, Mirabello Consultancy can advise on alternative programmes such as the Malta Global Residency Programme or the Malta Permanent Residence Programme (MPRP).

What are the benefits of a Malta Digital Nomad Visa in 2026?

The Malta Digital Nomad Visa offers remote workers a unique combination of European lifestyle, Schengen Area access, and a favourable tax position, all with a straightforward application process.

Key benefits include:

  • Schengen Area access: Travel visa-free across 27 European countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • Favourable tax treatment: Digital nomads are generally not subject to Maltese income tax on foreign-sourced earnings, provided they do not work for Maltese clients
  • Low application cost: Just EUR 300 to apply, making it one of the most affordable digital nomad visas in Europe
  • Fast processing: Approvals typically within 4 to 8 weeks
  • Quality of life: English-speaking island nation with warm climate, rich history, excellent healthcare, and a vibrant expatriate community
  • Strategic location: Central Mediterranean position with direct flights to major European, Middle Eastern, and North African hubs
Do I need health insurance for a Malta Digital Nomad Visa?

Yes, comprehensive health insurance is a mandatory requirement for the Malta Digital Nomad Visa. You must hold a policy that provides full medical coverage valid in Malta for the entire duration of your stay.

Health insurance requirements include:

  • Coverage scope: The policy must cover hospitalisation, emergency treatment, and repatriation within the EU and Malta specifically
  • Duration: Insurance must be valid for at least the full period of your residency permit
  • Family members: If you are including dependants in your application, each family member must also have adequate health insurance
  • Provider: Both international and Maltese health insurance providers are accepted, though the policy must be recognised in Malta

Malta has an excellent public healthcare system ranked among the top in Europe. However, as a Digital Nomad Visa holder, private health insurance remains a legal requirement for your application.

Can I work for a Maltese company on a Digital Nomad Visa?

No, the Malta Digital Nomad Visa strictly requires that you work remotely for an employer or clients based outside Malta. You are not permitted to take employment with a Maltese company or provide services to Maltese clients under this visa category.

The eligible work arrangements include:

  • Foreign employment: You must be employed by a company registered outside Malta, working remotely from the island
  • Freelance or self-employed: You may work as a freelancer or independent contractor, provided your clients are based outside Malta
  • Business ownership: If you own a business registered outside Malta and manage it remotely, this qualifies

If you wish to work for a Maltese company or establish a business in Malta, you would need to explore alternative visa routes such as a standard work permit or the Malta Global Residency Programme. Mirabello Consultancy can help you identify the most suitable pathway based on your professional circumstances.

What documents are required for a Malta Digital Nomad Visa application?

The Malta Digital Nomad Visa requires a comprehensive set of documents to demonstrate your eligibility as a remote worker with sufficient income and appropriate insurance coverage.

Required documentation includes:

  • Valid passport: Must remain valid for at least 12 months beyond the intended stay
  • Proof of income: Employment contract, recent payslips, or freelance contracts demonstrating a minimum annual income of EUR 42,000
  • Bank statements: Typically the last 3 to 6 months, evidencing consistent income
  • Health insurance: Comprehensive policy valid in Malta covering the full duration of stay
  • Proof of accommodation: Rental agreement, property ownership documents, or a letter from your host in Malta
  • Background check: Clean criminal record certificate from your country of residence
  • Completed application form: Available through the Residency Malta Agency portal
  • Application fee: Payment of EUR 300

Mirabello Consultancy assists with document preparation and review to ensure a complete submission from the outset.

Is the Malta Digital Nomad Visa a path to permanent residency?

No, the Malta Digital Nomad Visa is a temporary residency permit designed for remote workers and does not directly lead to permanent residency or Maltese citizenship. It is renewable annually but remains a short-term arrangement.

However, if you wish to establish a longer-term presence in Malta, several alternative pathways exist:

  • Malta Permanent Residence Programme (MPRP): Offers permanent residency through a qualifying property investment of EUR 375,000+ (purchase) or EUR 14,000+/year (lease), plus government contributions of EUR 68,000 to EUR 98,000
  • Malta Global Residency Programme: Provides residency with a 15% flat tax rate on foreign income remitted to Malta, ideal for those seeking tax optimisation
  • Malta Citizenship by Naturalisation (MEIN successor): Merit-based citizenship pathway for exceptional individuals

Each programme has distinct requirements and benefits. Contact Mirabello Consultancy for a personalised assessment of which Malta residency or citizenship route best suits your long-term objectives.
